Expeditions: Samurai Combat System
Fast turn-based steel where positioning and interrupts win outnumbered fights.
Combat in Expeditions: Samurai is marketed as fast, freeing, turn-based warfare where movement, attacks, and interruptions can play out with overlapping tension instead of a sleepy round queue. Campfire Cabal calls this Simultaneous Combat Resolution: you still play in turns, but actions can resolve in parallel windows that reward planning and punish hesitation. You will be outnumbered. Surviving means choosing when steel begins—and that choice often starts in stealth and environmental staging.
Simultaneous Combat Resolution
Think in windows: who acts, who can interrupt, and who is still repositioning. Practical takeaway: do not stand in hallways hoping HP wins. Claim doors, elevation, and focus fire while enemies are still reacting to your ambush. Co-op twins can coordinate interrupts so one captain delays a heavy strike while the other finishes an isolated target. Solo captains need the same literacy with tighter action economy. Etiquette for two-player sync lives in How to Co-op.
From ambush to melee
Ideal fights begin before the initiative banner. Delete isolated sentries with Stealth System habits, manipulate lanterns and noise via Environmental Combat, funnel survivors, then unleash pirate shot and Japanese steel together. When stealth fails, fall back to prepared chokepoints. Cross-train with How to Stealth and How to Play.
Weapons and roles
Loadouts mix privateer tools and iconic Japanese arms. Assign companions so Piet Ruisch or Johan hold pressure while Antje or Fuma Ishiko finish disrupted targets and Raina keeps someone alive—or Étienne keeps someone talking. Inventory context sits in Items and Weapons & Gadgets. Class fantasy for Flynn lives under Classes.
Interrupt literacy
Interrupts are how outnumbered crews steal turns back. Bind them well—see Controls—and practice delaying a big enemy animation while a partner finishes a wounded target. Environmental prep should already have removed the hardest body before interrupts matter; if you are interrupting five enemies at once, staging failed upstream.
Terrain vocabulary
Doors, stairs, crates, and lantern light are characters. Fight on terrain you chose during stealth staging. If you are fighting on terrain the enemy chose, you already lost the first play. Rehearse with Environmental Combat until chokepoints feel automatic.
Co-op combat language
Twins can sync takedowns and ability combos. Call targets. Desync is how wipe jokes write themselves. See Co-op Overview.
Morale and narrative spillover
Cruel AOE victories can win the map and lose the companion. Steel is never only math. Glance at Companions if Raina goes cold after a massacre or Johan respects you less after a cowardly rout.
Damage types and honesty
Until EA reveals formal damage tables, judge weapons by role: opener, finisher, crowd stopper. Kage and Johan may excel at single-target duel windows; Piet Ruisch may excel at holding space while Raina stabilizes. Keep notes after each boss-like fight.
Outnumbered math without fake numbers
If the enemy brings twice your bodies, you need surprise, choke points, or interrupts that delete actions—preferably all three. Stealth supplies surprise; Environmental Combat supplies choke points; builds supply interrupts. Missing two of three is how highlight-reel wipes happen.
Week-one drill for Rome imports
Veterans should run one mission using only environmental staging plus interrupts—no consumable nuke buttons—to prove Samurai rewards different instincts. Samurai vs Rome lists other habit traps.
Companion steel assignments
Let Piet Ruisch brawl, Johan duel, Kage hold honor lines, and Tora-Hime anchor boss-like targets while Antje or Fuma Ishiko clean up isolated wounded enemies after interrupts land. Raina keeps the squad upright when those plans slip.
Practice goals for week one EA
Win a fight without using your strongest consumable. Win another after a broken stealth but a good chokepoint. Note which interrupts feel decisive under Simultaneous Combat Resolution. Update the Party Planner. Combat mastery is repetition with intention, not a single tier-list screenshot. Deepen loadouts on Builds once fundamentals stick.
